Sound doesn't work

Pronounciation sound doesn't work. Why?

I'm using an iPhone 1st gen. I tap the speaker button, it looks like something is loading. But nothing happens. I don't hear any sound.

When the voice is being generated, Dictionary displays a little activity indicator in the button bar at top. When the sound is ready for playback, the indicator disappears. I presume this is what you are seeing, correct?

Here is a simple test to try and troubleshoot the problem:
In the Dictionary Settings tab make sure that 'Word Shake' and 'Sound Effects' are both on. Shake the phone. When the new word definition shows up, do you hear the rattle sound effect?
If not, it is possible the volume on the phone is very low or that the phone is in silent mode.
A third, somewhat rarer, reason is that the iPhone OS sound system has stopped working correctly (one way to see if this is is the case is to check if other apps can generate sound). The only way I've found to remedy this situation is to reboot the device.
